What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

In the natural process of conceiving, the sperms travel through the mouth of the uterus, called the cervix, into the uterus and the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes are tube-like structures attached to the uterus on either side. A woman becomes pregnant when the egg from the woman’s ovary is fertilized by the sperm. This happens inside the fallopian tube. Sometimes, couples experience difficulty conceiving a baby, a condition known as infertility. Intrauterine insemination, also known as IUI, is one of the verified assisted methods of reproduction in which the sperm from the man is placed directly inside the uterus of the woman’s body. What to expect at the consultation for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

During your first consultation, you shall meet the fertility specialist, Dr. Jagrati Laad , from Wombs Fertility & Reproductive Health Clinic, Pune. The doctor shall ask about your medical history and examine you. At the clinic, you and your partner may have to undergo some tests based on which the doctor shall recommend the best treatment option to help you have a successful pregnancy. For IUI, Dr. Jagrati Laad shall share the plan of treatment with you after receiving reports of your tests. The plan shall involve deciding upon the time of IUI, based on your ovulation, or menstrual cycle, prescribing some fertility medicines, collecting and washing the sperm sample, and injecting the sperm into the uterus. You shall be monitored through blood tests and sonography throughout the process.

How is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) performed at Wombs Fertility & Reproductive Health Clinic, Pune?

The IUI is carried out at the time of ovulation. During ovulation, the mature egg in the woman’s ovary is released into the fallopian tube. You shall be given an appointment for the procedure according to your ovulation window. Dr. Jagrati Laad may give you a few medicines to stimulate ovulation. During the appointment, the doctor shall also ask for the semen sample from your partner or the donor. The semen sample is sent to a laboratory for sperm washing to obtain the best quality sperm. It usually takes about two hours for sperm to wash.

The doctor shall examine the cervix with the help of a speculum and insert a flexible tube called a catheter through the cervix into the uterus. The washed sperm is injected slowly into the uterus through this tube. This is a painless and simple procedure that takes only a few minutes to complete. You may resume your daily routine activities after the completion of the procedure.

What will happen after Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

After the procedure is completed, you shall be discharged from the clinic on the same day. You may get back to your routine daily work after the procedure. You may experience slight pain in the lower part of the stomach or a few blood stains from the vagina. This may go away within a day or two and does not require medical attention.

You shall be called for an appointment with Dr. Jagrati Laad , from Wombs Fertility & Reproductive Health Clinic, Pune, two weeks after the IUI procedure. If the urine test is positive for pregnancy, the doctor monitors your pregnancy through check-ups, blood tests, and ultrasounds. When pregnancy does not happen after the first IUI procedure, Dr. Jagrati Laad shall prepare for the repeat IUI according to your next ovulation window.

The success rate of the IUI depends upon the cause of infertility, your age, the use of fertility medicines, or the quality of the sperm of your partner or donor. IUI has not been found successful in couples where the men have very low sperm count, or women have blocked tubes.

What are the risks associated with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

IUI is a safe, quick, and painless procedure. A few risks associated with IUI are:

• IUI increases your chances of having twins or triplets. Babies may be low birth weight if there are twins or triplets.
• Rarely, some women may develop an infection. If needful, Dr. Jagrati Laad shall prescribe some medicines to treat the infection.
• Some women may experience blood spots from the vagina after the procedure. This does not require medical treatment and subsides on its own.
• Some women experience mild cramps in the stomach after the procedure.
• When women have taken excessive medicines for fertility, they may experience pain in the stomach due to swelling in the ovaries.
